PTZ vs Fixed Security Cameras: Which One Do You Need?

PTZ vs Fixed Security Cameras: Which One Do You Need?

Should your next security camera turn and follow the action, or quietly watch one fixed scene? PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras and fixed cameras solve different problems, and choosing the wrong type is one of the most common mistakes in surveillance planning. Here is how to decide.

What is a PTZ camera?

A PTZ camera has motors that let it pan left and right, tilt up and down, and zoom in on details. You can control it live from an app, set patrol routes, or let auto-tracking follow a person or vehicle across the yard. One well-placed PTZ can cover an area that would otherwise need two or three fixed cameras. A popular example in our range is the Reolink TrackMix Wired LTE – 2K 4MP Dual-Lens PTZ Camera with 4G LTE and Ethernet.

What is a fixed camera?

A fixed camera points at one scene and never moves. That sounds limiting, but it is exactly what evidence-grade surveillance needs: the entrance, the till, the gate or the parking row is recorded every single second, in the same framing, day after day.

The blind spot problem

The biggest weakness of a PTZ camera is simple: while it looks left, it cannot see right. If the camera is following a patrol route or an operator has zoomed in, everything outside the current view goes unrecorded. A fixed camera never has this problem — whatever happens in its scene is always on the recording.

Detail and zoom

PTZ optical zoom is unbeatable for reading a licence plate at 50 metres or checking who is at the far end of a warehouse. A fixed camera relies on its resolution: a 4K fixed model allows generous digital zoom in playback, but a long optical zoom will still resolve more detail at distance.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a fixed camera for every spot where you must never miss an event: entrances, checkouts, gates and perimeters. Add a PTZ camera where one device must oversee a large open area — a yard, car park or production hall — especially with auto-tracking enabled. The professional approach combines them: fixed cameras record everything, the PTZ investigates. Browse our full range of video surveillance systems to plan your setup, or ask us for free advice.
