Solar Panels for Security Cameras: Sizing and Placement

Solar Panels for Security Cameras: Sizing and Placement

Why a Solar Panel Changes Everything for Battery Cameras

A battery-powered security camera solves the problem of running cables to awkward spots, but it introduces a new one: someone still has to take the battery out and charge it every few weeks. A solar panel removes that chore almost entirely, provided it is sized and positioned correctly. Get it wrong, and you will end up with a camera that quietly drains its battery over a dark winter month and switches itself off just when you need it most.

How Much Sun Does Your Camera Actually Need

Solar panels do not need direct blazing sunshine to work, but they do need consistent daylight. Even on overcast days, a well-placed panel will trickle some charge into the battery. The real enemy is shade: a wall, tree branch, gutter or nearby building casting a shadow over the panel for a large part of the day will cut its output dramatically, even if the camera itself has a clear view of the area you want to monitor.

As a rule of thumb, aim for a spot that receives at least four to six hours of reasonably direct light during the day. South-facing positions work best across most of Europe, though east or west-facing spots can still perform well if they catch strong morning or afternoon sun.

Getting the Angle Right

Solar panels perform best when sunlight hits them as close to perpendicular as possible. A panel mounted flat against a vertical wall in a country with a low winter sun angle will produce far less power than one tilted to face the sky more directly.

  • In summer, a steeper vertical mount often works well because the sun is high overhead.
  • In winter, when the sun sits lower on the horizon, a more angled panel captures noticeably more light.
  • Many mounting brackets allow adjustment, so it is worth revisiting the angle twice a year as the seasons change.
  • Avoid mounting the panel flush against a wall if possible; a slight tilt outward improves capture and also helps rain run off rather than pool on the surface.

Matching Panel Output to Camera Consumption

Not all cameras draw the same amount of power. A camera that records frequently, uses spotlight or floodlight features, or sends frequent push notifications with video clips will use considerably more battery than one that only wakes up occasionally for a quick motion event. If your camera is used heavily, either because of a busy driveway or a pet that keeps triggering detection, consider a larger panel than the smallest option available, or be prepared to check battery levels through the app more often during the darker months.

It is also worth remembering that the battery itself has a role to play. A larger internal or swappable battery gives you more buffer during stretches of poor weather, since the solar panel only needs to make up the difference rather than fully recharge the camera from scratch each day.

Cable Length and Connector Placement

Most solar panels connect to the camera via a short weatherproof cable, and the connector itself is a common weak point if it is left exposed to direct rain. When installing, route the cable so that water naturally drips away from the connection point rather than running straight into it, and use any supplied rubber grommets or covers. If the cable needs to travel any distance from panel to camera, keep it as tidy and protected as possible, tucking it behind guttering or downpipes where it will not be an obvious target for anyone trying to disable the camera.

Seasonal Realities: Autumn and Winter Performance

Solar output naturally drops as the days shorten. This is not a fault with the equipment, simply physics: shorter daylight hours and a lower sun angle mean less energy reaching the panel. A system that comfortably keeps a camera topped up in July may only just break even in December. This is normal, but it does mean that autumn is the best time to check your solar setup before the weather turns.

Clean the panel surface of dust, pollen, or algae, since even a light film can noticeably reduce charging efficiency. Check that mounting brackets are still firm after summer heat and check the tilt angle is still appropriate for the lower winter sun. If you notice the battery percentage in your app trending downward over several consecutive days despite the panel being connected, it is worth physically inspecting the installation rather than assuming the battery itself is at fault.

When Solar Alone Is Not Enough

Some locations simply do not get enough usable light, whether due to dense tree cover, a north-facing wall, or a camera tucked under a deep porch roof for weather protection. In these cases, a solar panel can still help extend the interval between manual charges even if it cannot fully sustain the camera indefinitely. If a spot is genuinely unsuitable for solar, it may be worth reconsidering the camera’s position, or opting for a wired or PoE camera in that specific location instead, keeping solar and battery power for the spots where they can genuinely do the job unattended.

Practical Conclusion

A solar panel can turn a battery camera into a genuinely maintenance-free installation, but only if it is matched to a location with reasonable daylight exposure, mounted at a sensible angle, and paired with a battery capacity suited to how heavily the camera is used. Take a little time at installation, and again each autumn, to check positioning and cleanliness, and the reward is a camera that quietly keeps itself charged through every season without a single visit up a ladder.
